MDM Image Generator

I’m a Dungeons & Dragons game master and I like playing with miniature figures during the games.  I discovered that with 3D printing, it was possible to make terrain tiles for creating a setting for the miniatures.  And then, I stumbled across a website called Thingiverse, where they have 3D objects that are downloadable for free, which can be printed.

On Thingverse there’s a designer named Devon Jones who has created the most marvelous collection of miniature terrain 3D objects called OpenForge.  When talking with him about using those 3D object files as assets in a video game, he asked if it was possible to write a utility that could output a picture of an *.STL object, which he could then use to show a preview. Thus was born the MDM Image Generator program:

With this program, you can load an *.STL object file and export a 3D rendering of it in either orthographic projection (shown above) or an isometric projection:

There’s a repo on Github for it, but the latest version is available in a zip file for download from here.
